Hong Huazheng (Bachelor of Business Management, Class of 2010; Master of Sustainability, Class of 2026) began his journey with business at SMU, before pursuing fine arts and developing an artistic practice shaped by landscapes, climate change and sustainability. After four surgeries and significant vision loss in one eye, Huazheng had to relearn basic skills and navigate the world differently. That experience changed not only how he sees, but what he hopes others will notice — the environmental forces reshaping the places we think we know. In this episode of SMU Changemakers, Huazheng reflects on art, climate, learning and mentorship, including the SMU Emerging Artist Award he started in honour of a late mentor. Through his work, he invites others to look at the changing world with greater honesty, compassion and care.
